Los Angeles County is one of the original 27 counties amidst California and was established in 1850.  What used to be a small area along the coast, approximately 4,340 square miles, has sprawled immensely becoming one of the nations largest counties.

Los Angeles consists of the San Clemente and Santa Catalina Islands.  Orange and San Bernadino county borders to the East with Kern County to the North, Ventura to the West, and the waters of the Pacific to the South.

Los Angeles is the home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers men's basketball teams, Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, Los Angeles Sparks women's basketball team, the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, and the Los Angeles Kings hockey team.

There are a total of 88 cities within Los Angeles County.  Largely populated (10,179,716 people estimated in 2004), approximately 28% of the California residents have found Los Angeles County to be their final destination.  The county is one of the largest employer/employee areas in the five-county region and holds an estimated 92,871 positions.  Of these positions, 27,604 are in law and justice, 27,198 are in health services, and 20,170 are in social services resulting in a strong professional economic base.   Other major industries throughout include:  motion pictures and television production, music recording, and aerospace.
